Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin overlays or covers placed on the front surfaces of your visible teeth and are used to correct several cosmetic issues. Veneers are made of very durable materials that can be tinted to match your other teeth so they blend in perfectly.

When are veneers used?

Veneers can be used to correct the appearance of multiple aesthetic issues, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Discolored teeth that can’t be treated with professional whitening
  • Teeth with uneven or worn edges
  • Chips or other superficial defects
  • Teeth that appear too small or otherwise out of proportion with your other teeth or your smile

What happens during a veneer application?

Veneer application typically requires two office visits -- one to prepare your tooth and one to apply the permanent veneer. During the first office visit, Dr. Martin prepares your tooth by removing a very small amount of tooth material from the tooth that’s receiving the veneer. This process ensures your new veneer will rest “level” with the surfaces of the neighboring teeth. Then he makes an impression of your tooth and selects the shade for your new veneer. Before you leave, he places a temporary veneer on your tooth to protect it.

At your second visit, Dr. Martin removes the temporary veneer and attaches the permanent veneer to the tooth using a very strong bonding agent; he then shapes and buffs the veneer for a perfect, comfortable fit. Since the veneer material cannot be bleached, many patients opt to have professional teeth whitening before having veneers placed to ensure their new veneer matches their teeth to look their absolute best.

Are veneers hard to take care of?

No, your veneers can be cared for just as you care for the rest of your teeth. That means regular brushing and flossing and routine dental cleanings and checkups to make sure the veneer and the underlying tooth remain in good shape.

Can veneers help me have a more attractive smile?

Plenty of people can benefit from veneers, and since they can be used alone or as part of a smile makeover, there’s a good chance they can help you get the beautiful smile you’ve been looking for. The first step toward finding out if veneers can help you get the smile of your dreams is to schedule an appointment. During your visit, you learn about veneers and other options that can be tailored specifically to your needs and goals.
